Everything has two sides. So it is with these translations of my experience in the natural world. Literally and figuratively,
the leaf is an icon for a greater whole.
I am always aware of how the outside shape of a ceramic form naturally dictates the inside shape and the duality of that
fact. It's most evident in the throwing process. Hand building allows me greater control over that phenomenon. The inside
may or may not be a result of what is happening on the outside. Both are of equal importance and every decision is conscious.
Open forms are ironic because the inside is experienced first. I make you look at the outside. My closed forms are subtler.
I ask you to look at the inside.
I use color, pattern, and texture to trigger an emotional response as it also defines the form. The goal: to translate
a personal experience in such a way as to evoke similar feelings or memories in the viewer.
